What you get

Why it asks for VPN permission

Stopping a site from loading in every app on a phone is only possible through Android's VPN, so Android asks for that permission when you start a block and shows a key icon while it runs.

The connection carries name lookups and nothing else. A gambling site is answered with "does not exist" on the phone itself, and every other lookup goes straight to your normal resolver. Your traffic never passes through us.

What it does not do

• Every score is readable signed out. No account is needed to look anything up.
• The block answers name lookups on the phone. Your browsing is not routed through our servers, and your IP address does not change.
• We are not told which sites you tried to open while a block was on. Nothing records it.
• Your session is kept out of Google Drive backups, so it does not travel to other devices.
• You can delete your account from inside the app, and it deletes rather than deactivates.

What does the Niekie Android app do?

Is the app free?

Yes. It is free, there is no paid tier, and every score is readable without an account. Some operator pages carry a paid link, labelled as one where it appears; the score is computed before any of that and cannot see it. An account is for posting, reporting a payout and play controls.

Why does the block need VPN permission?

Android gives an app no other way to stop sites loading in other apps. The app uses the VPN connection only to answer name lookups on the phone: a gambling site gets "does not exist", everything else goes straight to your normal resolver. Your traffic is not routed to us and your IP address does not change.

Does Niekie see which sites I try to open?

No. The lookups are answered on the device. Nothing about which sites you tried to open is logged, stored or sent anywhere, so nobody can tell you afterwards either.

Can the app stop me gambling?

It makes it much harder. A block can be made longer instantly, and ending one early takes 24 hours. It is still an app on your phone, not a legal self-exclusion. For something an operator is obliged to honour, use GamStop or your state's self-exclusion programme.

Does the block survive reinstalling the app?

Yes. A block belongs to your account rather than the install, so it holds when you reinstall or sign in on another phone. That is why starting one needs an account.

Are there sites the block cannot catch?

A browser set to its own DNS-over-HTTPS resolver does not ask the phone's resolver, so the block does not see it. Turn off secure DNS in that browser, or use the system default, and the block covers it.

How do I install it without Google Play?

Download the APK from this page and open it. Android asks once whether your browser may install apps; allow it, install, and turn the setting off again if you like. After that the app keeps itself up to date: when a new version is out it downloads it, checks it, and installs it. The first update asks you to let Niekie install apps; from Android 12 on, later ones install on their own.

How do I know the download is genuine?

Two SHA-256 values are published beside the download. The file hash must match the APK you downloaded exactly, and the app refuses any update whose hash does not match. The certificate fingerprint belongs to the key every release is signed with, and it never changes; Android itself refuses an update signed with any other key.
