How gambling winnings are taxed in the US

Every win is taxable income at the federal level, whether it comes from a Las Vegas casino, a state-licensed app or an offshore crypto casino. You report it on Schedule 1 of Form 1040 even if nobody sends you a form.

  • Federal: your ordinary income rate. Large wins (over $5,000 on many games) have 24% withheld by the payer; the rest is settled on your return.
  • State: from 0% (Florida, Texas, Nevada, Washington, Tennessee and a few more) to over 10% (California, New York, New Jersey).
  • Losses: deductible only if you itemize, never more than you won, and from 2026 only 90% of them.
  • W-2G: slots and bingo from $1,200, keno from $1,500, poker tournaments over $5,000, other games from $600 at 300 times the bet. Offshore casinos never send one; the tax is still owed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay tax on gambling winnings?

Yes. In the US all gambling winnings are taxable income, including winnings from online and offshore crypto casinos, and you report them on your federal return (Schedule 1 of Form 1040) whether or not you get a Form W-2G. Most states tax them too; Florida, Texas, Nevada, Washington and a few others have no state income tax.

How much tax do you pay on gambling winnings?

Federal tax is your ordinary income rate. On large wins (over $5,000 from many games) the payer withholds 24% up front, and you may owe more or get some back depending on your bracket. State tax comes on top, from 0% in states without an income tax to over 10% in California, New York and New Jersey.

Can I deduct gambling losses?

Only if you itemize deductions, and only up to the amount you won. From tax year 2026 the One Big Beautiful Bill Act limits the deduction to 90% of your losses, so winning $10,000 and losing $10,000 now leaves $1,000 taxable. Keep records of every session, win and loss.

When does a casino send a Form W-2G?

A licensed US casino issues a W-2G for slot and bingo wins of $1,200 or more, keno $1,500 or more, poker tournaments over $5,000, and other wins of $600 or more at 300 times the bet. Offshore and crypto casinos do not send one, but the winnings are still taxable.

Are crypto casino winnings taxed differently?

The winnings are taxed as gambling income in dollars at the time you won them. If you then hold the coins and they change in value before you sell, that change is a separate capital gain or loss.
